It will stay stuck but I have found that just removing the adapter and putting it back in the same USB slot causes it to connect OK. I am at a loss to understand what's going on. It is clearly more an inconvenience than a critical event.

I should be grateful for any help or advice in getting the adapter to work as it does in the non-windows distros. The Ralink helps. Is this a XP SP3 install. I would have to assume it is. Is this the model?

The full software install from a CD is not necessary for Wifi on XP. I would uninstall the software and driver using the uninstall in Control Panel. Then install the basic driver for XP. Download the ralink driver here.

After uninstalling the Driver Software reboot and attach the dongle. Is there a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager next to Network Adapter? If so then you can install the driver using Device Manager by right clicking the device and selecting Update Driver. Point it to the X86 folder you unzip from the zip file within the zip file otherwise use the setup file. In the below link do not download the driver easy software.
